Curl Curl

This ultimate, luxury beachside home is set high on top of the headlands in North Curl Curl, with sweeping views of the South Pacific Ocean. Designed and built to provide a modern growing family a place of sanctuary and respite, the home is crafted from luxury timbers, natural stone and extensive walls of retractable glass.

Internally, the layout has been carefully planned with a true modernist approach, and a deep understanding of the families varying living requirements. With the importance of passive design paramount, double glazed commercial windows, skylights, and dramatically oversized cantilevered balconies are used to effortlessly connect occupants with each other, make use of natural pathways for airflow and control temperature through design.

Externally, a bold, monochromatic palette was thoughtfully selected to create street presence to a narrow 11 metre block. Layers of dark walls, charred timber cladding and concrete have been intentionally grouped together to create a moody, unambiguous façade. To assist in softening the external finishes, organic textures such as quartz crazy paved surfaces have been included, as well as a custom made, oversized pivot oak door. The end result, a deliberate, powerful and unapologetic minimalist façade.

The addition of a 10KW photovoltaic system and Tesla battery means the family maintains energy efficiency all year round with an 85% self-sufficient approach to power consumption.

Breaking down the home’s large footprint, interior spaces were formed as ‘pockets’ over six internal levels, creating a sense of intimacy and warmth, but also allowing for separation in a growing family context. Appreciating the beauty and impact of natural light, the main bedroom was positioned on the upper most level, with light drawn through the oversized windows and internal courtyard below. The master ensuite is open, with no internal doors, which cleverly invites further natural light into the space, once again connecting to the intent of achieving a modernist home, and completely rejecting traditional orientation of rooms.

A true, open-plan living area features a casual family room, a dining hub and a progressive kitchen design. An almost five metre window sits at the benchtop and provides a dramatic slither of natural light. This well considered feature is key for the space and offers the perfect amount of working light required in a kitchen. The use of honed marble, Sub Zero beverage and food fridges, along with Wolf cooking appliances only add to the luxury space. An integrated door system leads to a working second kitchen and pantry, where you will find a custom waste disposal chute system which speaks to the notion of designing practical and functional spaces in a modernist setting.

As you move through the home, you will see a high-end outdoor kitchen, which once again features Sub Zero and Wolf appliances, study pockets for each member of the family, break out spaces for the teenagers and sufficient built-in storage options on each level, catering for all members of the family, and their chosen activities. Perhaps the most unique room within the home is located on the basement level, and consists of a complete sound proof music hub, further highlighting this project as a truly bespoke home.

To inject warmth and personality, textures and materials were carefully selected, including, sustainably certified oak timber, marble, and wall panelling. In each of the bathrooms, there is an obvious presence of pattern, which connects all wet area spaces to each other. The repeated use of oak timber, in different formats, further enhances the relationship to all the interior spaces.

Given the location, the steep block and the nature of a multi-level, high-end build, this project was not without its challenges. The extensive excavation of rock and the need to protect the neighbouring properties meant the build required careful consideration and acute supervision. The extensive use of treated steel members carefully creates the cantilevered areas, providing protection from the coastal conditions. The narrow block is forgotten through the introduction of bold horizontal elements creating the illusion of an expansive home.

A sense of openness has been achieved by the elevation of the dwelling and a sense of hierarchy between the indoor and outdoor living spaces. From the upper alfresco, the view of the ocean is powerful, so to not undermine this in landscaping and pool design, was important. The pavilion and pool have been well considered, and feature a luxury sanctuary, whilst also offering an abundance of superb, liveable and light filled spaces, and a purposeful connection to the landscape.
